Amazon Key

Amazon released their Amazon Key service on November 8th to 37 cities in the U.S. and my city is one of the 37 that were chosen to have this type of service released to them.

Amazon Key is an in-home delivery service that Amazon Prime members can use anytime that they make an online purchase and may not be home at the time of the delivery. Like most people, I personally do not like the idea of anyone in my house while I am not there. However, with the purchase of $249, anyone who would like to use Amazon Key, will be provided with a smart lock on their door, a security camera and will need the Amazon Key app on their phones.

This is the scenario that Amazon representatives thought of when creating this service:

You order something online, but you are not going to be home by the time that your order will be dropped off. Package theft caused by “porch pirates,” as they are called, are in the back of your mind as we get closer to the holiday season and more orders will be made. The holidays are a wonderful yet stressful and dangerous time of the year and you are at work hoping that you will not be one of the 23 million Americans who experience package theft this year. So what do you do?

Do you re-arrange your plans to be home at that time?

Do you call in?

Do you sit and pray that nothing bad happens?

If you were to get Amazon Key, you would not have to worry about this happening again! In fact, with the app, you will be notified when your package is about to be delivered to your house! You will also be notified when the delivery has already happened! With the smart lock, the delivery person would scan the bar code on your package just to verify that the delivery is being made to the right house. The lock will also allow them to open the door after there has been verification. And yes, you can actually deny them entrance with the touch of a button on your phone if you do not want them to enter your house after all. The security camera will video tape the delivery person dropping off your package so that you know what exactly they did. The video can be watched on your phone from wherever you are as well.

My first thought was that I would not go for such a service! I do not like the thought of strangers in my house! But then I thought more about it and realized that we live in a strange time where we trust strangers very often. More often than we realize!

Uber for example. I thought this was the most ridiculous idea ever when it came out. But as more time passed with this service, it has become just another form of transportation. Who’s to say that Amazon Key will not be just another form of free shipping? Yes, even though you have to pay for the security kit, if you choose the Amazon Key shipping option, it will be free.

This service is only a week old and only about 13% of all my social media followers said they would give it a try or consider it. I want to know what you all think about this if you’re someone who loves to online shop or if you have experienced package theft.

Let me know your thoughts! Watch out for Porch Pirates this holiday season and stay stylish!

  1. Huh. I’ve never heard of this. I don’t think I’d be comfortable with letting amazon into my home. I would absolutely need to know that extensive background checks were done on the delivery people, and even then I don’t think I would ever sign up for this.
